To ensure that the students pursuing MBA remained in constant touch with their social responsibilities, the Great Lakes Institute of Management, a Chennai-based management institute, has started a programme ‘Karma Yoga’, which is now compulsory for all students.

Under this initiative, each student would devote at least three hours a week to the project and perform services in a village and this would continue for five months. “We believe that values such as selfless service are important for a student,” said T.N. Swaminathan, director of admissions and associate professor of marketing at the institute, explaining the rationale behind this initiative. “This would help them later in their career too.” This would also provide students with exposure to the rural milieu, he said.

When most B Schools are finding getting decent jobs extremely difficult, Great Lakes has been able to succesfully place more than 85% of the batch and expects to reach 100% by Convocation. With more than 30 companies in pipeline less than 25 students left, 100% doesnt seem to be a distant dream.

Check the interim placement report (14th April – I am sure last 1 week has already had a positive effect on the numbers) on Great Lakes Website at http://greatlakes.edu.in/placementReport2009.php

Key Figures

Highest Salary – 22 L
Minimum Salary – 6 L
Average Salary – 8.5 L

The average salary has reduced by 12% due to economic slowdown but i do expect the final numbers will bring the average closer to last years and once again prove the growing acceptance of “Great Lakes Brand”

The raw materials are converted into appliances onboard this ‘floating factory’. Not only does this mean savings on factory costs, but the company is also making optimal use of the travel time, normally the most unproductive part of the whole distribution process. And no, this isn’t just wishful thinking. Professor Bala Balachandran, JL Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Accounting and Information Management, Northwestern University is currently working with this company (who he declines to name) on how to boost efficiency.
