Typically, around half the batch at IIM-A has work experience. Once they get past the CAT, they have to go through a group discussion and an interview before they are chosen. “The weightage given by the admission committee for the interview and academics varies. If more people with work experience have applied for CAT this year and have done well, we will take them,” said Mr Deodhar.

Other business schools, like the Indian School of Business (ISB) and Great Lakes Institute of Management, require candidates to possess work experience of at least two years.

“We normally try and maintain diversity in a batch. Normally, the percentage of bankers has been on the lower side and if there is an increase in supply, there will not be a problem,” said Great Lakes senior executive (admissions) M Yogalakshmi. The 2009 batch had only 9% from this field with a significant 53% of the students coming from IT sector.
